Astaxanthin by Doctor's Best is an antioxidant that supports healthy blood flow, the integrity of the vessels, improves the immune response, supports memory and other brain functions.
Astaxanthin also improves eyesight, relieves eye strain and has beneficial effects on cell membranes that manage important vital functions.
The body cannot produce Astaxanthin, it must be taken through diet or supplementation.
Astaxanthin is made from algae and moves through the food chain when algae are consumed as food. In fact, it gives the red color to seafood such as salmon, trout, crab, shrimp, lobster and krill, but these sources of astaxanthin for many are not common in most diets.
Doctor's Best is pleased to offer this nutrient in its natural form, as concentrated from the microalgae Haematococcus pluvialis.
How does it work?
The molecular structure of astaxanthin is long and thin, at both ends with "polar" groups compatible with water, while the central segment is "non polar" and not compatible with water. This molecular structure allows Astaxanthin to move in cell membranes without substantially affecting the structure of the membrane, providing powerful protection against cell damage, such as damage caused by free radicals. All cells have membranes and it is essential to maintain the health of these membranes for the cell to function properly. Each cell membrane is an ultra-thin sheet of lipids in which enzymes and other catalytic proteins are inserted. The intense metabolic activities inside the cell membranes generate substances that are precisely known as highly reactive "free radicals". The damage caused by these radicals can be mitigated by the antioxidant activity. Astaxanthin provides cell membranes with a powerful antioxidant defense against these free radicals.
